For the 2015 London Festival of Architecture we decided to chart the daily grind at the Common, a truly open studio where we worked amongst the public from January 2015 – March 2016. During this period we enjoyed the ongoing discussions with the patrons who could go about their chats & catchups in the midst of a contemporary design studio. We weren’t too distracted by conversations and the steam whistling through the coffee machine. In fact being in a hive of activity helped foster and develop ideas throughout the residency.
In the month’s leading up to the LFA we thought we’d try and capture this dynamic by carrying out surveys, documenting the interactions and exchanges taking place and presenting those learnings to the attending public. On the day of the open studio we also arranged a BBQ, gave talks and encouraged traffic through our office into Durham Yard where many other studios were also open to the public.
