The studio is led by three partners with extensive experience at international practices who take a leading role in each of our projects.

Khuzema Hussain

Khuzema’s experience demonstrates a capacity for resolving technical issues and delivering great ideas. He has a real strength in RIBA Stages 4 & 5 which has allowed him to build projects not only at Collective Works, but previously with Grimshaw Architects as well as RSH + P. Within the office he oversees the Responsibility programme which sees the company offer pro-bono services, volunteering days and charitable contributions.

Siri Zanelli

Siri is an experienced architect and Partner of Collective Works. She started her career working on tight sites in Japan and later gained experience on large scale infrastructure, housing and competition projects at Foster + Partners as well as RSH+P in London. She has seen a variety of small timber residential projects through to completion and her attention to liveable spaces and innovative use of joinery are a hallmark of her influence on projects.

Alasdair Ben Dixon

Alasdair is an architect and founding Partner at Collective Works. He started his career working on large projects at Morphosis and Grimshaw Architects and is also Trustee of Architecture for Humanity UK. This background in both the commercial and charity sectors plus experience of organising events, workshops and consultations means Alasdair always brings a unique perspective to the team.

We believe that great design takes passion, intelligence and personal commitment. We offer a wide range of design services so that our clients achieve coherent outcomes across adjacent disciplines.

We provide a full range of architectural services from concept design to construction. This can include developing your brief, preparing a feasibility study, submitting a planning application, developing construction documents or administering building contracts. The studio is led by three qualified architects who work with a hand picked team of designers to deliver the outcomes your project needs. Building Control

Building Regulations approval or Building Control is different from gaining Planning permission. On some building projects you might need both. Making sure that your property is compliant with Building Regulations can be an onerous exercise but we’ll make sure that process is as smooth as possible by considering each of the relevant Regulations from an early stages of the project, using our extensive past experience and talking with the building control officers at the appropriate stage. Once we have agreed a good way forward with the officers we can then submit a full plans application or arrange onsite inspections to ensure your property gets the compliance it needs. You can read more about how the process works over here at

Branding & Identity

We can create the Branding & Identity that your business needs to tell it’s story clearly and create impact across both digital and print media. Our  team of graphic designers have built up authentic insights into branding across the music, hospitality, academic and corporate sectors. Once we’ve discussed your goals and established your brief we’ll carry out targeted research, listen to your consumers, create accessible logo design studies and eventually provide a coordinated solution across a range of formats. If your delivery requires significant web development we’ll work with our trusted partners Lighthouse London. You can see a small selection of our previous projects here.

Concept Design

To help you find the best solution for your project we’ll often carry out a Concept Design stage. This exercise will help you understand the range of options available to you then evaluate them against your most important criteria. We will not only consider room layouts, external envelope and circulation but will also highlight impacts to overall cost and programme so that you can make an informed decision on how to proceed. On larger projects this stage may also include outline proposals for structural design, building services systems and outline specifications which can inform preliminary Cost Information. This work equates to RIBA Stage 2

Concept Design

Once your project is on site we can liaise with the contractor as Contract administrator or as your representative. This role involves site inspections and valuations which help your builder resolve questions and prepare invoices in line with completed works.

Coordinating Consultants

Your project may require specialist consultants such as a Structural Engineer or Quantity Surveyor. We can get them appointed and up to speed.

Developed Design

Our drawings not only present projects in the best light for any applications to Planning, but they also are a good basis for coordination with a structural engineer and even preliminary costs from builders.

Exhibition Design

Our experience with bringing concepts to three dimensions allows us to create exhibition designs and pop up shops, and we collaborate with product and lighting designers as well as our graphics team to create the right result.

We have used the community crowdfunding portal Spacehive to arrange fundraising for clients with ambitions but lack of funds, through illustrations and strong presentations we can create convincing fundraising campaigns.

Graphic Design

We design identities and promotional material for individuals and businesses. Once we’ve discussed your goals we can provide coordinated solutions across a range of formats such as stationary, newspaper ads, banners, posters, flyers and online content.

We have clear visual communication skills and can help you turn your business data into useful and interactive infographics.

Interior Design

We can provide an interior design service, advising on internal layouts, fixed furniture and cabinetry, as well as use mood boards with material and colour samples to create a complete look including furniture, artworks and finishes.

Lawful Development Certificates

If you are carrying out significant changes to your property such as combining two flats or making major internal changes it is recommended that you apply for a Lawful Development Certificate (LDC). This certificate will verify that the works fall within current legislation and do not require planning permission. We can help you apply for a Lawful Development Certificate to you proof that your property has been developed both safely and legally. Depending on the complexity of the works the application itself can be created relatively quickly and will usually includes 4 or 5 drawings and a covering letter which should be submitted to the council alongside a standard fee. You can read more about the councils requirements on homeowners over at the Planning Portal or alternatively just give us a call to talk through your needs.

Listed Building Consent

We regularly compile all the documents required for listed building consents including justification of proposals and detailed condition surveys of the existing building fabric. And we would undertake a thorough context analysis to present a stronger case for change.

Measured Survey

We can survey existing buildings and sites to make sure your project gets started with the right information in place.

Party Wall Awards

Many homeowner renovation projects impact walls that are shared by neighbouring properties. We can help provide the information necessary to assure neighbours that no damage will occur to their own property by works done on your project.

Planning Applications

Sometimes, the best ideas for a project can be untraditional. Whether they are or not, design proposals need to sit appropriately within the context. Our experience with numerous Councils as well as contacts with Planning Consultants helps us put the best case forward for your design.

Preparation and Briefing

During RIBA Stage 1 we’ll ensure the brief meets the project objectives and undertake feasibility studies as well as review site information.

Project Management

If you are unfamiliar with the construction process, we can manage the project by setting up a delivery programme, organising cost planning, and advise you on the next steps you have to take.

We can describe the products, components, materials and systems to fully describe the requirements and intended workmanship of the project.

Strategic Thinking

Before the project gets underway, we can help you make clear decisions on your business case and long-term strategy by providing intuitive and informed advice.

Web Design

We offer web design & development services having built websites for a number of small businesses and individuals. We guide clients through the best way to represent themselves online and often help clients maintain existing WordPress sites. Our branding & graphic design team can help your business decide on the right identity before we then roll that out across both print and web solutions. We have experience of creating dynamic websites which are optimised for search Engine ranking and when approached with larger projects which require more extensive development we’ll work with our experienced web development partners, Lighthouse London, to deliver great solutions.

Technical Design

Our extensive project experience allows us to prepare detailed information which will get more accurate prices from contractors, garner Building Control certificates, and give you confidence about what your project will look like when the works are complete. We prepare drawings, specifications and a schedule of work which would be coordinated with engineers and other consultants.

We use 3D modelling extensively in our design process. These are used to test ideas, give a better understanding of final spaces and help publicise projects.

“We felt that Collective Works would be perfect for the renovation of our property and are really happy with our house, and see us living here for the rest of our lives.”

Ragnar Hartvig

“Crucially the project became as personal to them as it did me, and the results speaks for themselves. I would have no hesitation in recommending this extremely innovative and energetic partnership.”

Matt Kemp

“Collective Works were a pleasure to work with on this extensive project. I found that they exceeded my expectations in terms of both professionalism and creativity. I look forward to working with the team again on future projects.”
