Collective Action!

< Back to Insights

As part of this year’s RIBA Guerilla Tactics conference, we were invited to particpate in a conversation about collaboration, working together, working apart  and how that works in practice.

Guerlla Tactics conference describes itself as a creative business conference for sole practitioners and small-sized architectural practices. For its participants, it is an annual festival of discourse and learning that highlights alternative routes, best practice and the wealth of exciting small practices around at the moment.

The event, called ‘Stop Collaborate and Listen’  – itself written up by the RIBA Journal here – led to more collective actions.  This time in the form of contributing a chapter to Collective Action! The Power of Collaboration and Co-Design in Architecture.

Our chapter is called In-Sourcing: Experiments in organising a 21st-Century Architecture Studio.

It documents how we have developed as a studio, bringing unconventional approaches to how we organise our time and workplace in an attempt to tackleissues around work/life balance, discrimination and how to design positively for people’s lives and planetary health.  It is an honest account of what went right, and what we have learned from.

We stand by our original beliefs that flexible work is not only possible, but essential in architecture, getting the most out of people, and also allowing them to get the most out of life. Our collective mind is more powerful than any individual, and our personalities complement each other to use this mantra to its utmost. The flat hierarchy, with strong but transparent leadership seems to be working for us.

Collective Action is available at RIBA Bookshop and other good booksellers. You can read a review here in the RIBA Journal.
