Collective Works featured in Old House Handbook

< Back to Insights

The Old House Handbook by Roger Hunt and Marianne Suhr is a practice guide to the care and repair of old houses.  It uses a principal of ‘gentle sympathetic repair’ to guide the reader to helping to maintain homes so that they can be enjoyed by future generations.

Old House Handbook cover

It gives practical advice and tips that will help residents of old houses to care for and repair their homes effectively, and allow them to remain in good condition for us to enjoy. Arranged over fourteen chapters, it looks at all aspects of home renovations. It’s brilliantly illustrated with real life examples of how homes have been renovated, and Collective Works are proud to have one of our projects highlighted as best practice.

The Upside Down House is featured in ‘paints and finishes’ for its use of clay based paints in a bold contemporary colour scheme. Balancing the needs of modern life with respect for the old fabric is something that has to be done with care .  In the ‘Living for today and tomorrow’ chapter, the authors look at altering and adapting homes , through extensions and loft conversions. They celebrate their use to bring in natural light and create new spaces, again citing the Upside Down House for its considered and effective approach.

The book is published by SPAB (The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings) and available widely.
