The Remakery

The Remakery is a co-operative workshop and hot desk space in South London developing opportunities around the reuse of surplus materials. By providing space for the community to work with surplus materials, this work space lays the foundation for activities that allow society to evolve and thrive.
It was born in 2012 when the local Transition Town group took on the lease of a disused underground car park. Since then, they have worked with Architecture for Humanity UK ( now Open Architecture Collective) and Collective Works to transform the derelict space into an inspiring, accessible and safe place to work using reclaimed materials and volunteer labour.
Material Matters
Now established as a Society for the Benefit of the Community, the not-for-profit maker-space has fostered a community of makers, artists, local residents and enterprises that have been breathing new life and creativity into things destined for landfill – encouraging people to actively rethink, recover, reuse and redistribute surplus materials.
The Remakery hosts talks, discussions and workshops about different practices of remaking. It is also home to a zero waste vegetarian café, a reclaimed timber store and six communal rooms where a variety of projects take place.
Their mission is to spread awareness and connect like-minded individuals. Building partnerships and sharing knowledge through all that goes on here.
Remaking the Remakery
We helped the project get planning permission in 2012, and then got involved with the self build in 2014. We return regularly, supporting The Remakery in their projects. The next phase of development is to retrofit the former car park space to improve its thermal and acoustic insulation. This will benefit the internal user experience by making it warmer and quieter and reduce the carbon footprint and energy bills of the building.
