Sustainable Air Source Heat Pumps for London Homes
< Back to InsightsWhilst the UK government is phasing out gas boilers in new homes, we also see that a lot of our clients that are refurbishing existing homes are moving away from gas boilers if the mechanical system needs upgrading. Air Source Heat Pumps are a sustainable, future proof and economic alternative to a gas boiler. We have recently installed one in Golders Green, and are in the process of installing them on projects in Finchley, Kensal Rise and Hampstead
Installing an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) in a traditional London terrace can offer several benefits, both environmentally and economically. Some of the discussions and issues discussed with our clients during their decision making are listed below.
What are Air Source Heat Pumps?
Air Source Heat Pumps are a piece of mechanical kit, placed outside your home, that can be used to heat your home and provide hot water for kitchens and bathrooms. They are an eco-friendly alternative to a traditional gas boiler.
How does an Air Source Heat Pump Work?
An Air Source Heat Pump transfers heat from the outside air to the water in your heating system. This system works especially well with underfloor heating, as your floors effectively act as large radiators. The pump can also be used to heat the hot water cylinder for your bathroom and kitchen appliances.
Is an Air Source Heat Pump suitable for my home?
Whether an Air Source Heat Pump is suitable for your home depends on the type of heating system you have – the capacity of underfloor heating or radiator – and the level of insulation and airtightness. ASHPs have a low flow temperature, which can be challenging if your home is uninsulated and the heat is lost. If you are doing a retrofit and are adding insulation and airtightness, an air source heat pump can be a very efficient choice.
How much do Air Source Heat Pumps cost?
Recent quotes for typical terraced London Homes (2023) have been between £11.000 and £15.000 for Heat Pump and Hot Water Cylinder supply and installation. Working with the right team will allow you to apply 0% vat to the mechanical installation, and you would also be eligible for the £7500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme Grant. The size and the capacity of the pump depends on the size of your property and the insulation level and airtightness. As part of upgrading the building fabric we would supply information about insulation levels and U-values, as well as air tightness levels, to the suppliers of the ASHP. Based on this information they will specify the system needed for your house, and can give a firm quote for supply and installation.
